Alcohol abuse effects every aspect of a person’s life. Not only does it cause health problems, but it can ruin relationships, cause financial hardships, and damage a person psychologically. Alcohol abuse is not a topic to be taken lightly, it is serious and if left untreated can ruin a person’s life and the physically effects can even kill the sufferer. It is important for people who have a problem with alcohol to understand the effects that will inevitably happen if they continue to abuse alcohol. Unfortunately, almost everyone who has a drinking problem that is left untreated will face the rehabilitating effects on both their life, the lives of their loved ones, and their health. Physical Effects Heavy and prolonged alcohol consumption damages the body. The most commonly thought of disease that is caused by alcohol abuse is cirrhosis of the liver. This disease can be fatal and many alcoholics who do not get treatment die from it. Alcohol also damages the brain and just about every other bodily system. Alcoholics may also gain a lot of weight because of all the sugar in alcohol, or they may lose an unhealthy amount of weight because their eating habits are negatively affected by alcohol use. An alcoholic will also suffer from changes in skin tone and may even experience the telltale red nose that is caused by drinking. Alcoholics often face fatigue and more health problems because of their drinking than normal people. Alcoholism is a disease that can kill the sufferer if left untreated. Psychological Effects The psychological effects of alcoholism can be just as serious as the physical effects. Alcoholics often use alcohol as a coping mechanism and therefore have problems dealing with life and solving their own problems without alcohol. Alcoholics are prone to suffer from depressions, either as a result of their low coping ability or as a result of feeling hopeless because of their situation. Alcoholics also commonly suffer from anxiety disorders, have mood swings, and are prone to be violent. These personality changes have a negative effect and can cause a drop in self esteem and confidence. Alcoholics can also suffer from an alcohol induced psychosis. Because of the entire negative psychological affects of alcoholism, many alcoholics become suicidal or withdrawal from their lives and loved ones. Relationship and Financial Effects Because alcoholics suffer from so many psychological and physical ailments, it makes functioning normally hard. Alcoholics often have problems with friends and family because of their drinking. Friends and family may try to help and then become resentful or angry if their attempts fail. The reverse is true as well. An alcoholic who is approached by friends or family trying to help may get angry or resentful and push them away. In the end, an alcoholic may only have a relationship with alcohol left. Alcoholics also may have a problem holding down a job, which will lead to financial strain. They may spend inordinate amounts of money on alcohol and even go into debt or have a hard time managing their finances. Alcohol abuse effects are serious and should not be overlooked if you or someone you know has a drinking problem. Signs of Alcoholism |
