Signs of Alcoholism


If you think you may have a drinking problem, there are some warning signs of alcoholism you should look out for. One of the hardest things for alcoholics or people with drinking problems to do is to realize that they have a problem.

There are different levels and stages of addiction, so even if you only have one or a couple of these warning signs you should evaluate your drinking habits and determine if it is possible that a more serious problem will develop.

Alcoholism affects every part of a person’s life and is a serious problem. It eventually will damage the liver, brain, and other bodily organs. Alcoholism will also negatively impact relationships with friends and family as well as work.

One you realize that you may have a problem with drinking, it is important to take steps to resolve the problem quickly so that it does not grow worse. The more addicted a person is to alcohol the harder it is to stop the destructive behavior, and the more likely it is for them to relapse after treatment. You do not have to be in the late stages of alcoholism to seek treatment, as soon as you realize that you are having a problem with alcohol get help before it is too late and you have done permanent damage.

Common Signs of Alcoholism

  • Always drinking to excess when you drink or drinking only to get drunk or “catch a buzz”
  • Missing work or social functions because of a hangover or being drunk
  • Lying to friends, family and coworkers about your drinking habits or trying to minimize the amount you drink
  • Hiding the fact that you drink from other people or drinking alone
  • Having blackouts due to the amount that you drink
  • Feeling like you have to drink or having the compulsion to drink
  • Missing social gatherings, family events, or other fun things because of drinking
  • Financial hardships because of the amount of alcohol purchased or trouble maintaining a budget due to drinking
  • Being charged with DUI’s or other drinking related crimes
  •  If you have tried to stop drinking in the past but failed
  • Poor eating habits due to a focus on drinking
  • Mood swings or violence while drunk
  • Not being able to function i.e. go to sleep, start the day without a drink

These are the common signs of alcoholism that you may have a drinking problem. There are different stages of alcoholism and even if you only have one or two of these symptoms you should seriously evaluate your level of drinking and seek help. Some people who are full blown alcoholics will only experience a few of these symptoms and others will face all of them. If you think you have a drinking problem, get help before it is too late.
